Robert KurtzmanA knife whizzes through the air and embeds itself in actress Pricilla Barnes’ chest, just above her left breast. The actress, clad only in her underwear, looks dumbly down at the weapon protruding from her as she dies. A horrific scene in Rob Zombie’s film THE DEVIL’S REJECTS and one made possible by the special effects magic of Robert Kurtzman. Kurtzman has been in the business of making movie magic for over twenty years. Whether it is buffalos in DANCES WITH WOLVES, Deadites in ARMY OF DARKNESS, or zombie vultures from his own film THE RAGE, Kurtzman makes the impossible possible on the big screen with his special effects know-how.

At the 2009 Scarefest Horror and Paranormal Convention in Lexington, KY, Kurtzman’s Creature Corps takes up most of one row. A shelf containing masks sits next to a row of busts of monsters that his effects shop has created. Everywhere you look, there is something monstrously wonderful to see among the displays of special effects and movie memorabilia.

If you missed out on The Scarefest in Lexington, KY, you missed out on a very interesting Q & A session entitled “Men Behind the Monsters”. The panel featured Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th VII, VII, Jason Goes to Hell, and Jason X), Chris Carnel (My Bloody Valentine 3D and stunts galore in numerous other movies), Gunnar Hansen (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Walter Phelan (House of 1000 Corpses),  Warrington Gillette (Friday the 13th part 2) and of course Doug Bradley (Hellraiser, Nightbreed). Often hilarious and never at a loss for words, Doug Bradley spoke very openly about a few topics. Among them, the always well-spoken Bradley, talked about his favorite and least favorite of the Hellraiser series, the obvious future of the original series, the proposed remake, and his displeasure with Dimension Films. Check out the video below.

It’s amazing what one can achieve with a little imagination. We often see directors and writers blame the lacking qualities of their films on low budgets, limited resources and numerous other misfortunes that the entertainment business often brings.  Yet, it’s the very opposite of these things that tend to soften directors into letting their lack of imagination disappear completely.

Yet in 2008, British director Marc Vincent Price used as little resources as one could possibly muster, and for a measely $70 out of pocket and a lot of help from social networking friends, created what may very well be the most unique look at horror’s zombie sub genre the world may ever see. Submitted for the Cannes Film Festival, Colin becamse the sleeper hit of the festival.

Filmed with a 10 year old camcorder and edited using home PC software, Colin is the engrossing journey of the title character, who after being bitten and infected by a member of the undead (who we later learn shared a close connection to Colin himself) slowly becomes a member of the undead himself, then begins his journey across town in order to feed on those still living.

Josh getting the table ready while I...stand there

As we gear up to put out a strand of new material from the 2009 Scarefest (which was absolutely phenomenal), we can’t leave those hanging who may have stopped by looking for their picture from our table. We took some pics for a handful of fans that we promised would be featured right here on benevolentstreet.com. We got tons of visitors at our table and it was a true pleasure to chat with each and every single one of you. We would like to extend a congratulations to Linda Corbet and Scott Moore who each took home a prize from our drawing.  We hope all of our new friends we met at The Scarefest will become regulars here at benevolentstreet.
